A Brief History of South Jordan, UT

The first known inhabitants of the area were nomadic hunter-gatherers in the Desert Archaic Culture. The Fremont people settled into villages to grow corn and squash from 400 AD to 1350 AD, but they left as the climate cooled and dried and ancestors of the Ute, Paiute, and Shoshone peoples arrived on the scene.

No permanent Native American settlements remained in the Salt Lake Valley when the Mormon pioneers reached it in 1847. The first settler in West Jordan was Alexander Beckstead, a Canadian blacksmith who helped dig the first ditch to divert water from the Jordan River to power a flour mill. His family lived in a dugout cut into the bluffs above the river. West Jordan was finally incorporated in 1835.

West Jordan is the site of one of the worst school bus accidents in US history. In 1938, a bus full of school children crossed in front of an oncoming train. The conditions were too foggy and snowy to see it, and it struck the bus, killing the driver and most of the passengers. The accident led to changes in state and even federal law requiring school buses to stop and open their doors before crossing railroad tracks.
