Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a procedure that is done when bacteria has invaded the pulp (nerve and blood supply of the tooth) which is caused by decay/cavities. This procedure is sometimes necessary when a tooth fractures to the pulp. Symptoms that may indicate that you need a root canal are; dental pain that keeps you up at night, a lingering pain when you drink something hot or cold, and lastly pain when you bite or chew on the tooth. Root canals can sometimes be a long appointment. The canals of the tooth are shaped and cleaned using special files and irrigating solutions. After the canals are properly cleaned, they are filled with material called Gutta Purcha. This Gutta Purcha is sealed into place preventing leakage to bacteria. After the root canal is complete, it is recommended that a crown be placed over the tooth to prevent it from breaking. After the root canal treatment, teeth become slightly brittle needing the extra protection of a crown. Root canals are very successful but due to the fact that we are dealing with bacteria, these teeth can sometimes become reinfected.

At Holt Dental Care we know that some root canals are better treated by an endodontist. Some teeth have root canal systemts that can be a little more difficult to navigate. Dr. Holt will inform you if it is in your best interest to have your root canal done my a specialist.
