West Jordan, founded in the mid-1840s on the western banks of the Jordan River, was once a tiny town with little more than a few thousand residents. West Jordan relied mainly on agriculture, mills, and mining, and in 1851 was the first leather tannery west of the Mississippi River.

One of the first sawmills was built in 1850 in the city by Archibald Gardner. Gardner’s legacy can still be seen in modern West Jordan. His collection of mills and houses, now historical, have been renovated into a specialty shopping district known as Gardner Village.
